WSOP Sees Youngest Winner Ever at First Poker Event of 2007
Event #1 of this years World Series of Poker is now in the books and the $5,000 buy in mixed hold'em tournament was won by Steve Billirakis, a 21 year old, meaning that he becomes the youngest player ever to win a WSOP bracelet.
Although it is becoming somewhat of a trend for young people to win these tourneys, Billirakis, at 21 years and 10 days, becomes the youngest winner ever. That is a record that has now been broken four years in a row, but will be tougher in the upcoming years to break.
The hand that won the tournament for Billirakis was #157 of the tourney, and it went like this, runner up Greg 'FBT' Mueller had the button. He raised to 200,000, Billirakis then re-raised to 300,000, Mueller re-raised allin for 325,000, and was called by Billirakis.
Billirakis' hand was a king of spades, 2 of diamonds, Mueller held 4-5 diamonds suited. The flop came Q-hearts,j-diamonds,2-spades, which meant Billirakis held the lead with his pair of dueces. The turn was an 8-hearts, and the river a q-spades, leaving Billirakis with two pair, and a WSOP bracelet.
Mueller finished the tournament in second place, making $328,554, while the champion Billirakis earned $536,237 for the victory.
