The World Series of Poker holds its Tournament of Champions event every couple of years. This year, twenty-seven of the most popular poker players in the world were invited to play in the event. The tournament began on Sunday.

With ten players already being eliminated, Huck Seed is currently the chip leader. Seed is holding 94,400 chips, compared to the 71,600 that Johnny Chan possesses in second position. Scotty Nguyen is currently third, with Erik Seidel and Joe Hachem in fourth and fifth.

Among the players that have already been eliminated are legend Doyle Brunson, Mike Sexton, who won the event last time it was played, and Joseph Cada, last year's main event champion. Dan Harrington and Andrew Barton have also been sent to the rail in the early stages of the event.

Hovering near the middle of the pack are some of the most popular players. Daniel Negreanu, Chris "Jesus" Ferguson, and Mike Matusow are all in the top ten. Further down, Antonio Esfandiari, Howard Lederer, Annie Duke, Jennifer Harman, and TJ Cloutier are in spots eleven through fifteen.

The winner of the tournament will walk away with $500,000. The second place finisher will receive $250,000, third wins $100,000, and fourth through ninth will all take $25,000 away from the tournament. The players are using the event to prepare themselves for the main event that begins in less than a week.

On Monday, a No-Limit Hold'em event with a $1,500 buy-in began at noon. At 5PM, a Pot-Limit Omaha tournament with a $5,000 buy-in will commence. On Tuesday, only a Triple Chance No-Limit Hold'em tournament will start. It carries a $3,000 buy-in.
