2008 British Open Betting Odds: Harrington Might Withdraw
The British Open betting odds already had defending champion Padraig Harrington as a 16-1 choice of winning for a second consecutive year. Now, those odds mat drop even lower than that.
Harrington took only two full shots on Wednesday in preparation of the British Open. He is bothered by a wrist injury that could keep him from even the opportunity to defend his crown.
His injury, coupled with Tiger Woods not being in the field, could make for an anti-climactic British Open. The best player in the game and the defending champion both could be missing when the tournament begins on Thursday.
Sergio Garcia is still the gambling favorite to win the event. His odds are 8-1. Ernie Els, who has had past success at the British Open, is still the second choice at 12-1. Phil Mickelson is also at 12-1.
Harrington has admitted had this been any other tournament, he already would have pulled out. He is hoping to play through the pain, but is uncertain how well he will do.
"I'll be apprehensive hitting any shot. I'll certainly be apprehensive hitting it in the rough. It might be a situation now of trying to manage the pain. If the stability in the wrist is strong, it's really dealing with the pain. The pain itself is not a problem, but the anticipation of flinching for the pain, that could be a problem. I've got to somehow manage that," said Harrington.
