When online sports books put together their odds for the 2014 Super Bowl, there will be factors taken into account that do not currently exist. With the NFL bringing the game to New Jersey, gamblers will have a whole new set of bets made available to them.

Over the past decade, the proposition bets that have been made on the Super Bowl have grown to the point where millions of dollars are wagered on props such as which team will win the coin toss. With freezing temperatures a possibility for the 2014 Super Bowl, that prop list will only grow longer.

The NFL likes to hang their hat on the premise that their sport is popular because of the action on the field. That may be true, but the larger reason the sport has become so popular is because the action on the field lends itself to tremendous gambling opportunities for millions of Americans.

By moving their biggest game to New Jersey, the NFL has all but guaranteed that the betting line for the game will be tighter. In addition, the total in the game will be several points lower than if the game was held in a warm weather location.

"Odds makers will be forced to take into account the weather in New Jersey when creating a line," said Gaming Analyst Steve Schwartz. "This could create a major advantage for gamblers. Let's say two weeks before the game, the weather is clear, the total for the game may be high. A gambler can play that total, and two weeks later, it could be snowing, causing the number to drop significantly. That could create a very uncomfortable situation for sports books."

Proposition bets will likely arise from the temperature. One online sports book executive believes there will be over/under prop bets on the exatc temperature at kickoff. The executive, who wished to remain anonymous, also indicated that a prop of whether or not there will be snowfall could be in play.

NFL owners have warmed in recent years to allowing gambling into their game. Last season, several teams partnered with local lotteries to promote and sell scratch off gambling tickets with team logos. Now, the NFL, though not by intent, have strengthened the sports books reach, and in turn, perhaps have grown the popularity of their sport once again through gambling.
