Alabama And LSU Fans Should Bet On Coaches, Not Recruiting Classes

College football recruiting is a lot like gambling. Coaches believe they know who the blue chips are going to be, but in the end many are left to wonder where things went wrong.

LSU and Alabama have been atop all of the lists that rank the best recruiting classes of yesterday. That does not mean, however, that these two teams will play the best on the field in the coming years.

What coaches do with their recruits is far more important than the recruit themselves. There have been may coaches in the past who can bring in the best prospects in the land, only to have them fall on their face. Charlie Weis in Notre Dame comes to mind.

The Irish have had top recruiting classes for the past several years and last year it resulted in a team that almost did not make it to a bowl game. The same can be said down in Coral Gables.

Randy Shannon is widely known as one of the best recruiting coaches in the nation. He had similar young talent as the Florida gators on the field last year, and the Hurricanes stumbled down the stretch and was blown out against Cal in their bowl game.

Granted, Shannon did not have Tim Tebow under center, but it still goes to the point that the development of a seventeen or eighteen year old athlete is far more crucial to a college programs success than the players athletic projections.

Major college football programs pay good money to assistants who never are seen when the lights go on Saturday night. Every position on the field has their own set of coaches, with coaches above them, and the head coach above all of them. Those position coaches are responsible for getting the most out of recruited players.

So LSU and Alabama fans can take joy in the fact that they are the top two recruiting classes this year. Those fans, however, should be more proud that they have coaches that know how to develop that talent, rather than praising the talent itself.
