Alabama Governor To Be Paid Off For Winning Gambling Bet
Alabama Governor Robert Riley has launched an all out attack on the video gambling industry in his state. That is why it comes as such a surprise that the governor would make a wager with another governor in another state.
Riley made a bet with Florida Governor Charlie Crist on the outcome of the Alabama, Florida, SEC Championship game. Riley offered up a rack of ribs from Dreamland Bar-B-Que, and Crist put a case of Florida oranges on the line.
In the case of Crist, the wager fell in line with his pro-gambling stance. Crist has been negotiating for several years to allow the Seminole Indians to expand their casino gambling options in the state, even though his efforts have been blocked by legislators in the state.
Riley, on the other hand, has been a staunch opponent of video gambling in Alabama. He has created a task force to seek out and raid what the governor believes are illegal gambling establishments. Last month, Riley won an important battle with one of the establishments in the Alabama Supreme Court.
Riley has made many comments regarding his anti-gambling stance, but showed in his bet with Crist that he is not immune to gambling himself. While the wager may have been a friendly gesture, it went against everything that Riley has stood for as the governor of Alabama.
The Crimson Tide won the game rather easily over the Gators. That left Riley to accept the fruits of his winning bet from Crist and the state of Florida.
