American League Central Betting Preview: Will Indians Rebound?
The American League Central is one of those divisions in baseball that is almost impossible to predict at the start of every year. Four of the five teams are generally competitive and the division champ usually is not crowned until late in the season.
That could happen once again in 2009. Like many years in the recent past, the Cleveland Indians are one of the favorites to win the division. They are a 2-1 choice and are coming off of a dismal 2008 season.
The Detroit Tigers, who everybody picked overwhelmingly last year, are once again considered to be a top team. They also struggled through last year, and are currently a 7-2 pick by sportsbooks.
The Chicago White Sox are one of the teams that people just do not know what they are going to get. Ozzie Guillen seems to take underdog teams and make great runs out of them. That is what happened last year when the White Sox won a one game playoff against Minnesota to win the division title. This year they are the third pick at 4-1.
Speaking of the Twins, odds makers have not forgotten about them. They are the division favorites at 7-4. The Twins have the most consistent closer in baseball in Joe Nathan and one of the best young one two punches at the plate in Justin Morneau and Joe Mauer.
Unfortunately there is another team in the American League West that has not been relevant in a very long time. The Kansas City Royals are the long shot for the underdog lovers at 14-1. With four quality teams in their division, it would take a minor miracle for the Royals to compete for a division championship.
