Americans Shock Brazil in Under 20 World Cup of Soccer
The Brazilians have been the model for international soccer for a long time, but if Friday was any indication, it could be that American soccer is finally taking a turn towards the Worlds elite.
The Americans received two goals from New York Red Bulls forward Jozy Altidore and then played strong enough defense to hold off the relentless attack of the Brazilian squad.
The victory secured the top spot in group D of pool play and will catapult the Americans into the round of 16. They will face a third place team from one of the other groups on Thursday in Toronto.
Although the majority of the crowd was decked out in Brazilian colors, it was the Americans who played as though they were the favorites, getting dazzling performances from both Altidore and teen sensation Freddy Adu, who made a jaw dropping move to set up the Americans second goal.
Brazil, which came into the tournament as one of the favorites, will now have to wait out the rest of round one and hope their 1-2 record will be enough to make them one of four round of sixteen births that go to third place teams.
