Asia The Target For Police in Soccer Gambling Crackdown, Phase Two
Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. Do not listen to ignorant Americans when they try to convince you the world's favorite sport is American football.
Along with the popularity that comes with the sport of soccer, there also comes the downside. In this case, the downside is gambling. Millions of people worldwide take part in gambling on soccer matches.
In Asia, police appear intent on busting as many of these illegal operations as possible. Last year, law enforcers from many countries including Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, and China took part in a string of arrests that saw 423 people arrested.
"Gambling on soccer matches might seem as harmless as placing a small bet on your favorite team, but these illegal operations are often controlled by organized criminals," said Ronald K. Noble Interpol Secretary General.
The arrests last year lead to 272 underground gambling dens being shut down. Like anything else, when one place shuts down, another opens up. That is why police have found it necessary to begin phase two of the operation this year. The details have not been released as to when and where the next raids will occur.
