Atlanta Braves Betting On Youth To Make Title Run
The Atlanta Braves thought they had it all figured out this spring. They re-signed fan favorite Tom Glavine in the hopes that he could finish his career as a Brave. They also surrounded Glavine with a rotation they felt was capable of contending for a division title.
Early on, that rotation fell apart a little bit. Glavine was unable to take the mound do to injury, and the rest of the team seemed to be stuck in a funk. Then on Wednesday, the front office decided it was time for a change.
They released Glavine, their last link to the glory days when they won fourteen consecutive division titles. In his place, they decided to go with rookie sensation Tommy Hanson. Although Hanson has not pitched yet in the majors, he has dominated the minor leagues.
"This kid has as good of stuff as any pitcher that has come up in the past five years," said baseball analyst Graham Bert, "if he lives up to his potential immediately, the Braves could make a strong run at the National League East this year."
While the news of Glavine's release did not sit well with fans, the teams next move on Wednesday eased some of the pain. Atlanta acquired up and coming superstar Nate McClouth from Pittsburgh. He will take over the center field duties.
With the additions of McClouth and Hanson, the Braves appear to have made the decision to go for a title this season. That should give Braves fans hope that indeed the team is headed in the right direction.
