Baseball Ready For Seven Game Series' in Divisional Round

Forgive Major League Baseball if they do not get things right when they try to alter their system. They are built on tradition and when they change the way they do business, it usually takes some time to perfect the new way.

The new way of the past decade has been the wild card teams making the playoffs. It has been great for baseball. Fans in many cities watch their teams in contention for the playoffs all the way until the final weekend of the regular season.

It is when the playoffs start that the new system needs tweaking. The divisional round of the playoffs is currently five games. That is too short of a series for teams that played 162 games fighting to make the playoffs.

The five game series allows for teams with two top pitchers to win the series. There is no need for the depth that shows the resilience of good teams. In some series', before they even start they are over.

The Cubs and Angels lost the first two games of their series at home, so they are not the ones to feel bad for in the current system. The White Sox and the Brewers, however, have been put in a tough position. They both went on the road for the first two games of a five game series, and now go home facing the prospect of playing one game in front of their home fans before they are eliminated.

This is unfair. After 162 games, all teams that make the playoffs should be afforded the time to get situated into a playoff series. The short five game series takes much of the manuevering out of the game.

In a seven game series, there are many momentum swings and series changing moments. In the five game series, they could be over before those moments ever occur.

Baseball did a good thing by going to a wild card team in each league. Now it is time to ensure those wild card teams get to enjoy the benefits of playing in a postseason. It is time for seven game series' in the first round.
