BCS Match Ups: NCAA Runs And Bails Out With Boise State-TCU Game
After Sunday's announcement of the BCS bowl games for this season, it has never been clearer that the powers-that-be in college football want no part of teams from small conferences crashing their party. TCU and Boise State being shuffled to the Fiesta Bowl is a complete travesty.
All season long, the NCAA and BCS supporters hoped to avoid the potential for controversy when a non-BCS conference school went undefeated and did not get a shot at a national title. Nebraska came extremely close to ruining their dreams by narrowly losing to Texas on the last play of the Big Twelve championship Saturday night.
So when the selections began on Sunday for BCS bowl games, the NCAA and the bowls did the one thing that would ensure that the Boise State's and the TCU's of college football continued to be overlooked in future years. They placed them in the same game, where one of them would have to lose.
Had Nebraska beaten Texas, the situation could have been much different and much more painful for BCS supporters. TCU would have ended up playing Alabama for the national championship, and that would have possibly sent Boise State to play Texas, and Cincinnati to play Florida.
In that scenario, there was the possibility of TCU, Boise State, and Cincinnati, all beating big conference schools in major BCS games. It would have been a nightmare for the NCAA. Instead, college football fans are left with the system's bailout.
The aforementioned possibility still could have existed even with Texas and Alabama playing for the title. TCU still could have played Georgia Tech, and Boise State could have faced Iowa. Instead, the selection committee decided to play it safe.
The worst case scenario for the NCAA would have been TCU, Boise State, and Cincinnati, all finishing undefeated after beating big-conference teams in BCS bowl games. That scenario is made a little easier by placing TCU and Boise State in the same game.
Critics of the BCS system have been screaming for years that the system is corrupt and manipulated to allow the rich to keep getting richer. On Sunday, the NCAA gave these critics more ammunition.
The NCAA claims they want what is best for college football and their fans. Well this fan does not feel he received what is best this season. I would have taken, TCU against Iowa, Boise State against Georgia Tech, or any other game that would have proven that these non-BCS conference schools could play on the big stage.
Instead we get to watch Alabama and Texas duke it out for a national title, and a Fiesta Bowl that took one for the BCS team. Arizona may end up with a game that features two teams that could be better than both the Longhorns and the Crimson Tide. Unfortunately, as demonstrated by today's selections, the BCS will never allow that theory to be proven.
