BCS Standings Week Two: Gators And Crimson Tide Still On Top

The problem with the BCS system in college football can be clearly identified in the latest standings that were released on Sunday. The Florida Gators are still the number one team in the standings and Alabama is again number two.

On the surface, there seems to be nothing wrong with those top two teams, but a deeper look shows the flaws of the system. The Florida Gators have looked nothing like the most dominant team in college football this season, but luckily for them, the computers that spit out the BCS results do not watch the games.

The Gators again looked sloppy in beating a bad Mississippi State team on Saturday night. The game was not settled until mid-way through the fourth quarter, and the final score does not show just how close the Gators were to being upset.

Florida has now sleepwalked through many of their games so far this season. They have survived each upset bid, mainly because their opponents, or in the Arkansas game, the referees, gave the games away. Good teams find a way to win games, and Florida seems to be doing that.

Alabama also had a scare on Saturday at home against Tennessee. The Crimson Tide survived after Tennessee missed a field goal that would have won the game as time expired. That was enough to keep them at number two.

Texas, the one top five team that actually played the part Saturday by crushing Missouri, stayed at number three. Although they did not move up, the Longhorns are still in a position to play for a national title should they win the rest of their games.

One good thing that came out of the Texas game for Longhorn fans is that there finally emerged a leader in the Heisman Trophy race. Colt McCoy was brilliant in the game, and now is clearly ahead of Tim Tebow and the rest of the Heisman hopefuls.

Iowa and USC rounded out the top five. The two teams both played tight games against lesser opponents, but came away with wins and held their ground in the BCS standings.

TCU made the all important jump over Boise State this week. TCU is now in a position to be the BCS buster this year should they win out. Boise State dropped to number seven. Cincinnati, LSU, and Oregon round out the top ten.
