Belmont Betting Odds: As Race Nears, Borel Looks For Greatness
When there is a triple crown at stake, it is usually a prized horse that is chasing it. This year at the Belmont Stakes, however, it is a jockey that is stealing the spotlight away from the horses.
Calvin Borel will be chasing history at Belmont in just over an hour from now. he is attempting to become the only jockey i history to win the triple crown with victories on two different horses.
The odds are certainly in Borel's favor. he is riding the favorite, Kentucky Derby winner, Mine That Bird. The horse was edged out in the Preakness by Rachel Alexandra and Borel. Now, Mine That Bird will go to the post as a 2/1 favorite.
The morning line shows that the top competition for Mine That Bird will be Charitable Man at 3/1. Dunkirk is 4/1, and after the top three the betting odds drop off dramatically for the rest of the field.
Of all of the horses, Luv Gov is the long shot, although not by past betting standards. The horse is still only at 20/1, perhaps with odds makers learning their lesson in the Derby when Mine That Bird won as a 50/1 choice.
Trainer Barry Zito is no stranger to the Belmont. One of his horses actually won the race last year, and this year Zito will send Brave Victory and Miner's Escape into action, both at 15/1. Preakness winner Rachel Alexandra will not be racing at the Belmont, getting what her owner described as a "vacation."
