Belmont Betting Odds: Ice Box Remains Favorite
This year's Belmont Stakes may be remembered more for the horses that did not run than the ones that did. many of the top horses that ran in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes are not in New York for the Belmont.
One horse that is at the Belmont is Ice Box, the betting favorite. Ice Box is holding at odds of 7/4. The horse will have some competition , however, notable from Fly Down, the second choice at 5/1. First Dude is the third choice, currently having odds of 6/1.
Without the Derby or Preakness winners running, the Belmont is struggling to find compelling story lines. Trainer Nick Zito is receiving attention because he has two of the top three betting favorites in the race. Zito trains both Ice Box and Fly Down. Ice Box finished second in the Derby.
Horse racing in general has been losing its momentum over the past decade. Many tracks throughout the US are struggling financially, leaving purses below what horsemen are used to seeing. The Triple Crown usually offers some publicity to the sport, but with no possible Triple Crown winner, this year's Belmont has lacked appeal.
As is the case with any horse race, the Belmont does offer gamblers some horses that are considered long shots to win. Spangled Star currently has odds of 22/1, and Stay Put has the longest odds in the field, at 25/1. In all, twelve horses will go to the post in the Belmont. Below is a list of the odds for today's race.
