Belmont Gambling May Be Down With No Derby Or Preakness Winners
Horse racing's Triple Crown is situated in such a way that the Belmont Stakes becomes the key race for any horse looking to capture the elusive Triple Crown feat. This year, however, gambling on the Belmont could drop to its lowest point in recent history.
In the past several years, there have been horses that have come to the Belmont after impressive runs at both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. This year, the Belmont will not have either horse that won the first two legs of the Triple Crown.
Super Saver won the Kentucky Derby with Calvin Borel as the jockey. Borel predicted after the race that Super saver was a strong enough horse to win all three of the prized Triple Crown races.
That prediction was put to rest just two weeks later. This past Saturday, Super Saver finished a disappointing eighth in the Preakness. The Derby favorite, Lookin at Lucky was the winner in Maryland after having a rough run at Churchill Downs.
The Belmont Stakes is not for almost three weeks, but already Todd Pletcher, the trainer for Super saver, and Bob Baffert, Lookin at Lucky's trainer, have announced that their horses will not be racing at Belmont Park.
That has left New York without a back-story for the first time in years. Gamblers tend to pay more attention when a horse is going for the Triple Crown, and even when the names are recognizable from previous races, the Belmont attracts bettors.
This year will be different. Belmont Park and sponsors of the Belmont Stakes will have to work hard to sell the race, much like a boxing promoter has to sell the average boxing taking place in this day and age. With the racing industry already hurting in the US, sports books will be hoping to pull off a miracle, and doing so without the Derby and Preakness champions will be a tall task.
