Betting Favorites Miss Out As McMurray Wins Brickyard 400
Jimmie Johnson and Tony Stewart have dominated NASCAR over the past decade. On Sunday, the two were part of a group that were the betting favorites to win the prestigious Brickyard 400. Neither came away with the win after Jamie McMurray took the checkered flag.
Johnson was in the number two position at the start and was an 11/4 choice to win the race. Juan Pablo Montoya won the pole on Saturday morning with the best single lap at the time trials. McMurray held on, however, beating out Greg Biffle and Kevin Harvick.
Montoya looked again like he was headed towards winning the race, but much like last year, late unfortunate circumstances cost Montoya the win. This time around, Montoya and his pit crew decided to put four new tires on with only twenty-three laps remaining. McMurray and several other drivers chose to change only two tires.
The time difference in the pits allowed McMurray and other drivers to take advantage and make up ground on Montoya. Eventually, Montoya finished the race in thirty-second after colliding with Dale Earnhardt Jr. Earnhardt Jr. finished in twenty-seventh place.
Johnson similarly had a bad run on Sunday. Johnson, who has been the top driver the past couple of years, finished in twenty-second after starting in the second position. Johnson had his string of two straight Brickyard wins halted, although he still has won the race three times.
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is one of the most legendary tracks in NASCAR"s Sprint Series. Chip Ganassi's team has now won three of the most notable motor sports races this year in the Brickyard, the Daytona 500, which McMurray also won in February, and the Indianapolis 500, won by Dario Franchitti.
