Big East Receives Three Number One Seeds In NCAA Tournament

Many college basketball experts have made the claim that the Big East this year may have been the strongest conference ever for an individual season. That was not lost on the NCAA tournament committee that made three Big East teams number one seeds.

Louisville won the regular season and conference tournament championships in the Big East despite being considered by most to be the number three team in the conference. The Cardinals now head to the NCAA tourney as the overall number one seed.

The second seed in this years tournament also comes from the Big East. Pittsburgh had been ranked number one this season, but they fell early in the conference tournament. Still, the Panthers were rewarded for their consistent season with a second overall seed.

The third seed comes from a conference that is used to being the spotlight conference, the ACC. North Carolina was upset by Florida State in the conference semi-finals, but held on to a number one seed.

The last of the number one seeds went back to a Big East team. Connecticut would have held the number one ranking for most of the year had they not lost to conference foe Pittsburgh twice. The Huskies also were upset in their conference tournament.

The NCAA tournament be4gins on Wednesday with a play-in game, and the majority of first round games will start on Thursday and Friday.
