Boise State finally received some respect in the pre-season polls this year after finishing last season undefeated. Coming into the year ranked number three in the AP poll, Boise had to avoid an early season upset that could have ruined their championship dreams after one game.

Monday night, Boise traveled to Maryland to face Virginia Tech. The game was technically played on a neutral field, but it has been estimated that over eighty percent of the crowd was pulling for the Hokies. That alone made analysts weary of picking Boise State.

Early on Boise looked great, but they slowly gave away a seventeen point lead. In the fourth quarter, a last minute drive saved their season, and bought Boise some respect among voters. Tuesday, Boise stayed at number three in the AP rankings, but they did get seven first place votes.

If the Broncos go undefeated this year and are kept out of the title game, the BCS is going to have some explaining to do to fans. It would be the second consecutive undefeated season by Boise State, neither of which ending in even an opportunity to play in the title game.

That, however, has less of a chance of happening this year being that Boise has started at number three. Even TCU moved into the top five on Tuesday, meaning that two of the top five teams currently in the AP poll, are from non-BCS conferences. If both go undefeated, and big conference teams all lose at least one game, college football could have not one, but two non-BCS teams in the championship game.

Alabama and Ohio State remained number one and two in the rankings. That could change this weekend with both teams facing stiff tests. Alabama will be on the road playing a hungry Penn State team, while the Buckeyes will face number twelve Miami in the Horseshoe.
