Boxing Gambling Odds: Mayweather Jr. Favored In Match With Mosley
Floyd Mayweather Jr. could have been standing across the ring tonight from Manny Pacquiao, both fighters dueling with the winner and loser both cashing in millions of dollars. Instead, it will be "Sugar" Shane Mosley that will be across from Mayweather Jr.
What is left of the boxing world had hoped the two best fighters in the world, Mayweather Jr. and Pacquiao could have settled their differences in the ring. Politics, however, stopped the fight and forced both fighters to put off the inevitable and find other boxers to bridge the gap to the big payday.
For Mayweather Jr., the task at hand may be more difficult than boxing experts predict. Mosley is a former champion and has lost a step at age thirty-eight. Mosley still possesses a speed advantage over the bigger Mayweather Jr.
Odds makers have Mayweather Jr. as the overwhelming favorite at -450. Any gamblers looking for the upset will be treated to odds of +275 for Mosley. They may be long odds, but in boxing terms, the odds are not as large as the numbers look.
The risk for Mayweather Jr. is immense in this fight. The only thing separating himself from a fight with Pacquiao was Mayweather's insistence that drug testing be done two days before the fight. Pacquiao is a smaller fighter, and did not want blood drawn that close to the match.
Tonight's fight between Mayweather Jr. and Mosley will be held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. If Mayweather Jr. wins, the next stop could be the mega-match with Pacquiao that would become the fight with the richest purse in the sports history.
