The Brett Favre saga has officially begun. Rumors have been circulating on Tuesday that Favre sent out text messages to several friends and told them he was retiring from the NFL. It is almost commonplace during the first week of training camp for Favre rumors to start swirling.

If, however, Favre does confirm his retirement in the next couple of days, it would deal a severe blow to gamblers who have placed bets on the Minnesota Vikings this season. The Vikings would see their Super Bowl betting odds drop significantly without Favre at quarterback.

Minnesota was considered one of the top choices to win the NFC this season before Tuesday. After word of Favre's alleged retirement surfaced, those odds fell to double digits at some sports books. If the retirement is confirmed, the odds would likely settle around 12/1.

The Vikings played in the NFC title game last season, and if not for five turnovers against the New Orleans Saints in that game, it may have been Favre and the Vikings hoisting the Lombardi Trophy last February. Minnesota again was poised to make a strong run this year, but need a healthy Favre to do so.

Tarvaris Jackson has been the recipient of bad news last year when Favre announced he would return. Now it appears that Jackson may be handed the keys to a team that was just one victory away from reaching the promised land last year.

NFL analysts and other players around the league cautioned not to read too much into the retirement story. Favre is dealing with an ankle injury, and there is a chance that even if he does retire, the injury heals and Favre is in uniform when the Vikings open their season in New Orleans.
