British Open 2010 Betting Odds: Tiger Woods Fares Well On Day One
The British Open 2010 betting odds suggested that Tiger Woods may finally break out of his slump and earn a PGA victory. Woods did not disappoint on day one, firing a -5 and positioning himself to make a run at another major title.
Woods came into the British Open playing some of the worst golf of his career over the past several months. Since running his SUV into a tree back on Thanksgiving night, Woods' personal and professional life have both crumbled.
A pending divorce is expected to cost Woods hundreds of millions of dollars. Sponsors that rewarded Woods over the past decade have abandoned the golfer since his infidelity admissions, and his golf game has been almost non-existent. Despite all the negatives, sports books believed that Woods was the man to beat.
heading into the British Open, Woods was installed as a 5/1 favorite. He was the only golfer entered in the tournament with odds of less that 10/1. In fact, a trio of golfers, Phil Mickelson, Justin Rose, and Rory McIlroy, were all second choices at 16/1.
Every major golf tournament brings some player from the middle of the pack to challenge for the title. Ernie Els, Lee Westwood, and Padraig Harrington would be among the golfers in that group, with 18/1, 18/1, and 20/1 odds, respectively.
In addition to the mid-range odds, several long shots with big names could make a run at St. Andrews this weekend. Sergio Garcia has odds of 50/1, while Retief Goosen comes in at 40/1. Martin Kaymer, Jim Furyk, Paul Casey, and Steve Stricker are all at 33/1.
