British Open Final Round Betting Odds: Oosthuizen A Big Favorite
This weekend was supposed to be about old foes Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson renewing their rivalry at St. Andrews. Instead, heavy winds and less than ideal conditions have knocked all American players out of contention heading into the final day.
The British Open at St. Andrews has been a test of patience for the world's best golfers this weekend. Woods played well on Thursday and survived Friday, but on Saturday he could not get any putts to drop, and he was all but eliminated as a title contender.
The player that was on top when Saturday ended was the same player that started the day as the leader. Louis Oosthuizen is at -15 after three rounds and takes a four stroke lead over Paul Casey into the final round. No other golfer is within six shots of the leader.
Sports books have adjusted their odds heading to the final day. Woods, who opened as the betting favorite, has slipped to 100/1 to pull off a miracle. Oosthuizen is the new favorite, with odds of 4/5 to hold on and capture the first major victory of his career.
Casey has the second highest odds, at 9/4. A pair of golfers, Martin Kaymer and Lee Westwood are at 12/1. Westwood may have been in better position had he not finished sluggishly on Saturday. Now he will need a collapse from Oosthuizen to get back into contention.
Mickelson has been disappointing all the way through the tournament. Lefty's week began a little unfortunate, watching other golfers post big scores in the morning before the winds picked up. By the time Mickelson hit the course, it had become a nightmare for himself and the others in the afternoon. Even with the poor performance, Mickelson managed to make the cut on Friday.
