Broncos Betting On McDaniels Over Star Quarterback Cutler
Most NFL teams spend years trying to find themselves a franchise quarterback. They draft some players, and they sign others through free agency. No matter what their method is, the fact remains that only a handful of teams succeed in finding their man.
The Denver Broncos have been lucky in this area. They had John Elway under center for a long time and upon his retirement, they turned the reigns over to Jay Cutler. Last year, Cutler made the Pro Bowl.
This fact may be lost on Broncos management. They handed their head coaching job to Josh McDaniels after firing longtime coach Mike Shanahan. The organization claimed they wanted to go in a different direction, and it appears that direction is towards chaos.
Shanahan had the Broncos entrenched as one of the organizations that others turned to as the model for success. he consistently took his team to the playoffs, and there were rarely off the field distractions.
McDaniels is only a couple of months into his job and already there is signs of a lack of institutional control. Star quarterback Jay Cutler has asked the team for a trade, largely because of McDaniels' blunt affirmation that he had tried to trade the franchise quarterback.
Now, instead of diffusing the situation, the management in Denver seems content with allowing McDaniels to call the shots. Whether he will be able to mend his relationship with his star quarterback is yet to be seen.
One thing is certain, however. The Broncos are betting on McDaniels to make everything alright.
