In the state of California, it is currently illegal for residents to place bets on sporting events. That has left millions of gamblers going into the underground market to make their wagers, creating an unsafe betting environment.
With online gambling becoming a hot topic on the federal level over the past couple of weeks, California state Senator Roderick Wright would like to push the envelope on gambling. Wright believes that sports betting should be legal in California and in other states.
"If you took the sports book in Nevada and other places, it's a pretty healthy piece of money, and we currently don't get squat," said Wright, as reported by The Los Angeles Times. "I don't know how much longer we can afford to basically be providing the revenue to all these other states from California people."
The issue of keeping gambling money at home has fired up all across the US. In most cases, casino gambling expansion is being proposed to keep gamblers from traveling to neighboring states where casinos are legal. Dozens of states have changed their casino gaming laws in the past couple of years.
In the Northeast, sports betting has already been legalized in Delaware. Bettors may now place parlay bets on the NFL and other sports. While single game bets were denied by the courts, the parlay bets are netting Delaware millions of dollars in revenue.
New Jersey legislators are pushing hard for legalized sports betting. Increased competition from Delaware and Pennsylvania has left Atlantic City casinos searching for ways to regain their dominance. Lawmakers believe sports betting may be the answer.
Senator Wright is the chairman of the committee that deals with gambling in California, and he has started the process of convincing fellow legislators that sports betting would be a major source of income for the state. New Jersey has filed a federal lawsuit for the right to offer sports betting, and Wright believes California should join in the lawsuit.
