Carmelo Anthony Trade May Change Nets Betting Odds This Season

The Carmelo Anthony trade rumors have been going on for so long that even the star forward himself does not know where he will be playing at the end of All-Star weekend. Rumors are circulating that a deal with the Nets is now in place, and that Anthony could be traded as soon as this evening.

If Anthony is traded, it could signal the dawn of a new era in New Jersey. The Nets would also acquire Chauncey Billups, and the two, combined with promising young star Brooks Lopez, could be a formidable foe for any of the top Eastern Conference teams in the playoffs.

The Nets currently have long betting odds to win the Eastern Conference championship, but those odds would shorten considerably with the addition of Anthony. New Jersey still would not be listed among the elite teams, but they would vault some of the mediocre teams in the East.

Another rumor circulated Friday that Billups would like to sign with the Miami Heat. It is likely the Nets would trade for Billups and then release him, making him free to sign with another team. The Heat are in desperate need of a point guard, and Billups would be a perfect complimentary player to LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh.

All-Star weekend may a time when several teams assess their chances of winning a title and make moves. The Los Angeles Lakers lost three games in a row going into the break, the last coming at the hands of the league's worst team, Cleveland. The Cavaliers lost by over fifty points to L.A. in their previous meeting, but managed to pull the upset this week.

The Dallas Mavericks are another team that could tweak their roster at the break. Dallas is playing well and currently sits in second place in the West. The Mavericks, however, may feel it necessary to bring in more size to deal with the Lakers and San Antonio Spurs in the playoffs.
