Cavaliers Betting On Title Run To Help Keep LeBron James
During the first few years of his tenure with the Cleveland Cavaliers, LeBron James continually said that he expected management to put pieces around him that could help him compete for a title. It turns out, there are not many additional pieces needed when a team has the best player in the NBA.
James is most likely going to win the league MVP award this year, and the team is betting on a strong run at the title helps keep James in Cleveland for the rest of his career. That run began today with a dominating performance over the Detroit Pistons.
James has well documented ties to Jay Z, who has an ownership stake in the New Jersey Nets. The New York Knicks have also made many moves this year in anticipation of the free agent class of 2010.
Cleveland knows their best shot to keep James is to shower him with love, and a championship season could go a long way in their efforts. Whether the players around James are good enough to win a title will be seen this post season.
If the Cavs somehow get bounced from the playoffs early, James may begin to consider the task of bringing a title to Cleveland to be to great. That may start the dreams of playing in a city that can attract big name free agents to play alongside him.
For now James is saying the right things. He has become one of the greatest leaders in the NBA, and if Cleveland allows him to test the market, there is a strong possibility they will not be able to compete.
That is why they are gambling on one strong championship run, and a whole lot of love, to keep their star player around for years to come.
