Cedric Benson Arrest Could Lead To Gambling Problems In Cincinnati
The Cincinnati Bengals have always been a team that has taken players who have had trouble on other teams, and given these players second chances. Cedric Benson was one of those players after Benson wore out his welcome in Chicago.
The running back rewarded the Bengals last season by having a breakout year, and Cincinnati won the AFC North over division favorites Pittsburgh and Baltimore. In the process, the Bengals also became the darlings of many NFL gamblers.
Now, Benson has given both the Bengals and the bettors reason to worry. On Tuesday, Benson was arrested and charged with misdemeanor assault, stemming from an incident at a bar almost one month ago. Benson is accused of punching the employee in the face.
If convicted, Benson could face up to a year in prison and $4,000 in fines. The incident occurred at Annie's West in the entertainment district in Austin, Texas. An altercation occurred between Benson and another customer at the bar. As employees broke up the melee, Benson was pushing and shoving as he was escorted out. According to the employee, Benson punched him in the face once outside the bar.
Benson has a different version of the story, but his attorney did not offer up Benson's account. Instead, attorney Sam Bassett said that Benson will tell his side of the story when the time is right. Benson, according to Bassett, has cooperated with Austin police during the investigation.
The Bengals are once again expected to challenge for the AFC Central crown, and Benson is being counted on to carry the bulk of the rushing load. Betting odds suggest that it will be the Steelers, Ravens, and Bengals fighting for the top spot in the North.
