Gamblers have been waiting since February for an NFL game to bet on. They were teased last Sunday with the Hall of Fame game and again on Friday, but Saturday provided the first full slate of games for bettors to get excited about.

The San Diego Chargers and the Pittsburgh Steelers were among the betting favorites on Saturday evening. The Chargers and Steelers have both had plenty of success in the past decade, and on Saturday they showed they may once again be ready to make a title run.

Pittsburgh opened up against the Detroit Lions at home in Heinz Field. The Steelers are coming off one of their most tumultuous off-seasons in the history of their organization, and all eyes on Saturday were on quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. The quarterback that led Pittsburgh to two Super Bowl wins was cheered by fans, but did not get into the game.

With Roethlisberger suspended for at least the first four games, Byron Leftwich was given all of the snaps with the first team. Despite their QB sitting on the sidelines, the Steelers were able to put together an impressive 23-7 win over Detroit.

On the other coast, it was the Chargers who were providing the thrills for gamblers. San Diego received the first look at the new-look Chicago Bears offense. The Chargers must not have been that impressed with Mike Martz's new squad, because San Diego rolled to a 25-10 victory.

The Chargers went 13-3 last season, but again failed in the playoffs. This season, Phillip Rivers and his teammates are again favored to win the NFC West, and they are hoping to advance to the Super Bowl for the first time in the Rivers era.
