Chicago White Sox Taking A Big Gamble On Alex Rios

The Chicago White Sox are in the midst of a pennant race. They are locked in a battle with the Minnesota Twins and the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers currently have the upper hand, although only a couple of games separate the teams in the standings.

This is the time of year where one or two additions could mean the difference between one team succeeding and making the playoffs, and another team going home. The White Sox are making moves like they want to be the team in the playoffs.

Their latest move is somewhat surprising. They have claimed former All-Star Alex Rios off of waivers. Rios, as much as he is an all-star caliber player at times, is also somewhat of a gamble for the Sox.

Currently, Scott Podsednik has been playing well for the White Sox, providing a spark after he was called up from the minor leagues. Team chemistry is important in baseball, and nobody really knows how the White Sox will gel with Rios.

Even though he is a former All-Star, there is evidence the past couple of seasons that Rios' abilities are deteriorating. His home run totals have gone down in consecutive years, and he is not hitting for the average he was just a few short years ago.

Still, the White Sox needed a spark. If Ozzie Guillen and his staff can get Rios back to top form, Chicago fans could be in for a treat. If not, it may be lights out in the American league Central.
