Chiefs Gambling That Matt Cassel Can Help Turn Things Around

Matt Cassel is a prime example of how quickly things can change ion the NFL. Last year he went into the season as the little known backup to Tom Brady in New England. By the end of the season, Cassel had become one of the most sought after quarterbacks in the league.

With Brady's recovery on schedule the Patriots took a chance on Saturday by sending Cassel to the Kansas City Chiefs along with linebacker Mike Vrabel. New England received a second round draft pick in return.

Cassel will now be called upon to lead the resurrection of the Chiefs. They have not been relevant for years and this off season they have made wholesale changes in hopes of once again returning to the top of the AFC West.

The changes started with their head coaching position. Herm Edwards was relieved of his duties and Todd Haley took over the reigns. Kansas City also changed General Managers, with Scott Pioli coming over from New England.

Pioli's familiarity with Cassel may have led to the trade. His working relationship with the Patriots also could have helped the deal along. If Cassel would have stayed in New England, the Patriots would have had to pay him $14.5 million after they franchise tagged him.

Instead, they shipped him off to Kansas City. Last season Cassel threw for 3,693 yards and had twenty one touchdown passes.
