The Cincinnati Bengals came into the off season knowing that they would have to sign a big time wide receiver to play on the opposite side as Chad Ochocinco. For the past couple of days, the speculation is that player might be Terrell Owens.

While Ochocinco and Owens fueled the rumors with their tweets and interviews, the Bengals had something else in mind. Today, they signed former Buccaneers wideout Antonio Bryant to a four year deal worth $28 million.

As recently as Tuesday night, Ochocinco was lobbying to get Owens to Cincinnati. he commented that it did not take long to put a signature on the dotted line. Then, Owens reiterated the idea when speaking to the Cincinnati Inquirer.

At about the time when fans started to believe the Bengals with Owens and Ochocinco could work, Cincinnati signed Bryant. It is not known whether Owens may still be an option for the team, but the wide receiver position has at least now been stabilized.

Bryant has shown flashes of brilliance during his career, but has never played with the consistency needed to stay one of the leagues elite. Now, he will be asked to be the number two receiver on a team that won the AFC North last season.

Carson Palmer clearly needed more weapons on the offensive side of the football. The Bengals were embarrassed two weeks in a row by the Jets to end their season. Now, they are hoping Bryant provides enough big plays to keep them on top of their division and move them further through the playoffs.
