The Cincinnati Reds had plans of challenging for the National League Central crown this season. They had what they thought was a potent line up to go with some strong starting pitching.

Through the first two months of the season, the Reds have looked like anything but contenders. The offense has been struggling to score runs, and the pitching has been spotty at best.

Then the Reds decided to roll the dice. They went gambling on one of their top projects from the minor leagues, Jay Bruce. All Bruce has done since showing up in Cincinnati is hit the cover off the baseball and rejuvenate a team that was lacking an identity.

Bruce has now gone 13 for 22 with two homers, six RBI's, six walks, and oh, he also has two stolen bases. Not a bad debut week for a rookie who has never seen Major League action.

a former phenom himself, an older Ken Griffey Jr. summed up Bruce's first week. "He's having the time of his life. From a guy who did it twenty years ago. It's definitely fun to see it, to see the kid smile day in and day out," said Griffey.

Cincinnati has now won twelve of their last thirteen home games, and appears ready to make a run in the Central. The only discouraging sign for the Reds is the team they are chasing, the Chicago Cubs, has the best record in baseball.

Still, the Reds are happy with their recent success. "I hope we can catch this momentum and whatever it is we have on the road and try to take it on the road," said Adam Dunn.
