Class Action Suit Takes On Ticket Lottery System For Sports Events
The NCAA and Ticketmaster have for a long time been benefiting at the expense of others. The NCAA reaps huge benefits every year from athletes who do not see any of the money that is generated in college sports.
Ticketmaster charges outrageous fees to process tickets to sporting events and to concerts. They are the only show in town, so people are stuck having to pay the fees.
The two groups may have pushed the envelope on greed a bit to far lately, and now they will have to answer questions. A class action suit has been filed against the NCAA and Ticketmaster.
The suit claims that the two groups are violating racketeering laws when they made people pay a non-refundable fee to enter a lottery for rights to purchase tickets. This practice has taken place at several high profile sporting events.
"The NCAA and Ticketmaster have come up with a scheme that would make a Vegas bookie blush. We will show that this NCAA practice has illegally taken millions of dollars out of consumers' pockets," said Rob Carey, an attorney representing the plaintiff.
The NCAA claims they are doing nothing wrong in running the lottery. "Our practice of dealing with excess demand for an event is standard in the industry. We have a nonrefundable fee charged to both successful and unsuccessful applicants. Those who do not receive tickets are refunded the ticket price," said NCAA spokesman, Erik Christianson.
The suit claims that people can apply for Final Four tickets up to ten times. Once they win tickets, the rest of their entries are void, and, "the other nine entry fees go right into the pockets of the NCAA and Ticketmaster," according to Carey.
