College Bowl Picks: Penn State Smelling The Roses
The Rose Bowl this year more than any in the past has a match up of two teams that, if not for unbelievable upsets, would most likely be meeting in the national championship game. USC and Penn State are widely considered the two best teams not in the title game.
How did it end up this way? USC lost an early season game to Oregon State in shocking fashion. That loss did not turn out to be as shocking later in the year with Oregon State almost winning the Pac Ten.
Penn State, on the other hand, has to be kicking themselves in the foot. They would be playing for the national title if they had not lost to three touchdown underdog Iowa on a last second field goal.
Although Penn State was ranked higher for most of the year, not many experts are giving them a chance to win today when they face USC in the Rose Bowl. Many believe that USC is the best team in the sport at the current time.
Usually when a team has their only loss has a lot to do with where they end up in the BCS rankings. USC should have lost early enough to rebound, but the lack of a championship game in the Pac Ten hurt their chances.
While they were sitting at home, Florida was dismantling Alabama in the SEC Championship game. Oklahoma was doing the same to Missouri in the Big Twelve title game. With those two teams readying for a battle in Miami, Penn State and USC are getting prepared for kickoff in Pasadena.
