The SEC has been dominant over the past decade, but much of the dominance has come from LSU, Florida, and Alabama. Auburn, a traditional power, is attempting to play their way back towards the top of the conference, and on Thursday they can take another step towards that goal.
The Tigers and the Mississippi State Bulldogs meet on Thursday night and will kick off the betting on college football this weekend. Thousands of gamblers will pour into Las Vegas sports books in the hopes of making some extra money early in the season.
Auburn heads into the game as the betting favorite, with odds of -2.5. The total for the game is 55, suggesting that a high scoring game could be on the horizon. Although it is early, the game could have SEC title implications, a fact that is not lost on either Auburn or Mississippi State players, coaches, and fans.
The other game that will help usher in the weekend will be Central Michigan on the road, facing Temple. Central Michigan is an underdog in the game, with Temple favored by 7.5 points. The total for this game is also high at 49, with two teams that can score early and often on offense.
On Saturday, three games will take center stage on the college football schedule. Oklahoma is ranked in the top ten and will be hosting Florida State. The Seminoles defeated Sanford handily last week, and are looking for a signature win to prove the program is back.
The number one team in the nation, Alabama, will be traveling to Pennsylvania where they will face the hostile environment at Penn State. The Nittany Lions and Crimson Tide should provide plenty of fireworks for fans all across the country tuned in.
The biggest game of the day takes place in Ohio where Miami will face Ohio State. The two teams have not met since a pass interference call helped the Buckeyes win a national championship almost a decade ago. The Hurricanes and Buckeyes were both impressive in their openers, but understand the task will be much greater this week.
