For anyone who follows college football and can go back a couple of seasons, they would not be surprised that a team ranked fourth in the country would be playing tonight when South Carolina faces Mississippi. They may be surprised, however, at which team held that ranking.

When Steve Spurrier was hired at the University of South Carolina many believed that he would take the Gamecocks program and turn it into a national contender. Instead, Spurrier has struggled to turn around South Carolina, and Ole Miss has become a national contender.

Mississippi had a strong year last season and will have their first chance to show the country that they deserve that number four ranking. The odds makers have indicated that they are not necessarily buying the hype.

The Runnin' Rebels are the betting favorite, but only by four points. It figures to be a high scoring game with the total up at 53.5. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN, so if Mississippi does win big, they will gain instant respect from fans all across the country.

The game will lead into another interesting weekend of college football. Penn State will host Iowa, the team that ruined the Nittany Lions chances for a national title last year. That game will be in prime time on ABC.

In the afternoon the spotlight will be on the ACC. The Miami Hurricanes have shocked the college football world by beating Florida State and Georgia Tech in their first two games. Miami now travels to face their third ranked team in a row in Virginia Tech.
