There was a time during the nineties that any given college football poll would have both the Miami Hurricanes and the Florida State Seminoles in the top five. Times have changed recently, however, and the Seminoles and Hurricanes have been battling to get back on top.
According to odds makers in Las Vegas, this may be the year the two former powerhouse teams return to dominance. Sports books have posted the ACC betting odds for the upcoming season, and FSU and Miami are the gambling favorites.
The odds makers have failed to make a distinction between the two Florida schools. The Seminoles and Hurricanes have identical odds of winning the ACC title at +250. That means that any gambler wagering $100, would win $250 should their choice of the Sunshine State teams win.
The Hurricanes defeated FSU in Tallahassee to open last season. Legendary coach Bobby Bowden retired, and in Coral Gables head coach Randy Shannon just received an extension. Those moves have stabilized both programs heading into the 2010 season.
Virginia Tech, a team that has had more success than FSU and Miami in recent years, is the third betting choice at +400. North Carolina is expected to have a strong defense, but questions surround the offensive side of the ball in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels have odds of +500.
Boston College, Clemson, Georgia Tech, and NC State are middle of the pack picks to win the conference. The four teams have odds ranging from +800 for Boston College, to +1500 for the Wolfpack.
Virginia and Wake Forest have odds of +2000, and +2500, respectively. The long shots to win the conference title are Maryland and Duke, both offering gamblers 50/1 on their money. The college football season kicks off in September.
