College Football Betting Odds: Texas Tech Opens New Era Today
The Texas Tech football program experienced a re-birth under coach Mike Leach, but the relationship crumbled late last season when players turned on the once popular coach. An incident involving ESPN analyst Craig James' son led to the dismissal of Leach.
Now, the Red Raiders open the season today with new coach Tommy Tuberville at the helm. Tuberville will continue to run the spread offense that Leach had been successful with in recent years. If the Red Raiders are going to have a drop off, odds makers are not predicting it will happen in week one.
Texas Tech is favored by two touchdowns over Southern Methodist this afternoon. The college football betting odds are different than the NFL in the fact that the spreads can often come out high for the opening games. In the NFL, the point spreads are relatively low for the opener, with odds makers unsure of how each team will perform.
Several upsets took place on Saturday, the biggest of which was Jacksonville State mounting a big second half comeback to defeat Houston Nutt's Mississippi Bulldogs. Florida and LSU, two other SEC powers, both escaped with wins after lackluster performances in their first games of the year.
Tulsa and East Carolina open their season today as one of the two college games scheduled for this afternoon. Tulsa is favored by seven points, and the total for the game of fifty-nine suggests an offensive shootout. The total is even higher in the Texas Tech, SMU game. The sixty point total indicates that Texas Tech may again have a potent offense.
The last of the opening week games takes place in college football on Monday night, and it is as close to a national championship implication game as can be possible in week one. Virginia Tech, the favorites in the ACC, take on a third ranked Boise State team that feels they were robbed of a title shot last year. Starting at number three this season, Boise can make an early case if they can defeat the Hokies.
