College Football Betting Preview: Gators Against Spurrier
The Florida Gators have not often looked like the best team in college football at times this season, but they still possess something that other teams do not-a perfect record. On Saturday, they will put that perfect record on the line against South Carolina.
Although it is not as big a story line as it was in past meetings, there still will be an old friend staring across at the Gators on Saturday. Steve Spurrier, a Heisman Trophy winner at Florida and the coach who brought the Gators their first national title, will be coaching the Gamecocks.
There are deep ties between Spurrier and the Gators, but there also is a competitive edge that calls for Spurrier to attempt to derail Florida's title hopes. If South Carolina should pull the upset, it could be the end of Florida's year and a half run on top of the college football world.
Of course the Gamecocks do not match up physically with the Gators. As has been the case in the past couple of seasons, South Carolina has underachieved when it comes to their expectations. Spurrier seems to have the talent in place, but has been unable to turn that talent into an SEC contender.
Games like the one that will be played on Saturday go along way for a program. If South Carolina could pull the upset there certainly would be a reward in recruiting battles with Florida, and Spurrier could convince recruits that the team is headed in the right direction.
On the other hand, a Florida win by a large margin would further put doubt into the idea that Spurrier can ever make the Gamecocks a legitimate contender. Game time is set for 3:30PM from South Carolina.
