College Football Preview: USC And Cal Play Elimination Game
College football is entering a stretch of weekends when the national championship picture could become a lot clearer. While no team has established themselves as truly great so far this year, several teams that were supposed to be great have faltered.
On Saturday, two of those teams, USC and California, will be playing in what is basically being billed as an elimination game. The two teams have both lost early in the year inside the Pac Ten, and another loss would crush their title hopes.
It is not only the national title that could be on the line. Whichever team loses Saturday would have two conference losses and would be down a tiebreaker to the winner. That would essentially end their conference championship hopes as well.
USC has already bounced back from their loss to Washington by winning last week. California is less than one week removed from the thrashing they took at the hands of Oregon. This weekend will be a test of how Cal players will respond to adversity.
California is supposed to be led by their high powered offense led by Jahvid Best, a Heisman Trophy hopeful. Last week, however, the offense sputtered after Oregon put together a game plan to stop Best.
USC is led by their defense. They have better athletes on the defensive side on paper than Oregon, so they could present even more of a problem for Cal than last week. The game will be played in prime time on ABC and will air regionally.
