College Football's Scarlet Knights Are Slighted By BCS Rankings
Every season there are a handful of teams that are left out of the BCS championship series that feel they belong there. This season will be no exception as the top teams in college football will be jockeying for position in the season's last few weeks.
Although the BCS formula has somehow wiggled out of creating controversy over who should play in their championship for the past few years, the formula has not escaped without debate over who should be in the other BCS bowl games. This season, it appears the championship game will also enter in the debate without two big conference teams undefeated.
The Team this year that appears to be on the outside looking in is the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. All Rutgers has done this year so far is run up a perfect record and defeated then #3 and undefeated Louisville. Most teams in a major conference would be ranked higher than the current slot of sixth that the Scarlet Knights hold. One would have to believe that if it was Penn St., Florida St. Nebraska, Oklahoma or any other school rich in tradition, that they would be ranked higher then sixth and be in position to challenge for a spot in the national title game.
Rutgers still has to play at West Virginia, who currently holds the #8 position in the BCS standings, if they should win that game that would give them wins over two BCS top ten teams at the time of playing them, a claim nobody else in the top ten could currently boast.
Somehow it seems though, that as good a feel good story Rutgers would be, the powers that be would rather have a one loss Notre Dame, Florida, or USC playing for the national title, and that would be a shame for a team who played in the first college football game ever played.
