Colts' Manning Will Be Playing For His Legacy In Super Bowl

It has been a debate that has spanned many generations and one that will continue for years to come, is a Super Bowl title needed to verify the validity of a players playing career.

Many of the NFL's greatest players played their whole career without even playing in a championship game. Dan Fouts, Chris Carter, Steve Largent, Dick Butkus, and Barry Sanders are just a few of the players who played their entire careers without playing in an NFL championship game.

It poses the question of where some of these athletes would stand had their teams won a championship.

Possibly the most controversial of conversations begins with former Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino. He holds almost all of the leagues all time passing records, but he failed to guide his team to a Super Bowl win, a fact that has some questioning whether he is the greatest quarterback of all time.

John Elway will go down as one of the best ever, but for much of his career he was mentioned in the same breath as Marino, a quarterback that was one of the leagues best, but one who could not lead his team to a title. Then, late in his career, Elway won two Super Bowls, lifting him above Marino in some people's eyes.

That leads us to this years game, where Peyton Manning will be trying to solidify his legacy as one of the all time great quarterback's, and although Manning is still in the prime of his career, it is unknown whether he will ever get this opportunity again.

So, Sunday's game could provide the answer to whether Manning will go down as the best quarterback ever, or whether he will still have the void that has haunted Marino and Fouts all of these years.
