Dani Jarque Tribute Caps World Cup Win For Spain And Gamblers
Andres Iniesta may have been waiting the entire World Cup to pay tribute to his friend and teammate Dani Jarque, who passed away due to a heart attack last August. On Sunday, the tribute came in a way that will allow millions of fans to understand.
Iniesta scored the winning goal in the 2010 World Cup with just over three minutes left before a penalty kick shootout. The goal sent Spain to their first World Cup finals win ever, but it was what happened after the goal that touched many.
Iniesta immediately ripped off his jersey to reveal an undershirt with the inscription, "Dani Jarque siempre con nostros." The English translation for the phrase is "Dani Jarque always with us." Iniesta received a yellow card for taking off his jersey, but the card seemed trivial compared to the tribute that Iniesta had just pulled off.
The goal and tribute were not only touching to Spanish fans, but also to gamblers. Millions of dollars were expected to be bet on the World Cup final, and it was the Spaniards that were the favorites. The number was not high enough to drive away bettors who believed Spain was the better team.
"There may have been plenty of people celebrating in Spain and around the world who have been waiting for this moment their entire life, but it is the gamblers who had confidence in the Spanish squad that also will be rejoicing through the coming weeks," said Gaming Analyst Steve Schwartz.
The World Cup as a whole had seen its share of upsets, with this same Spain team that won on Sunday experiencing one of those upsets in their first game. Back then, it was Switzerland that stunned Spain. The Netherlands gave their best effort to be the second team to upset the Spanish, but Iniesta's goal ended their dream of winning the World Cup for the first time ever.
