Delaware Loses Sports Gambling Appeal In US Supreme Court
The NFL won a victory on Monday that will allow the league to continue to operate under the false pretense that sports gambling does not drive the sport. The US Supreme Court rejected an argument from Delaware that called for a broader area for sports betting in the state.
The NFL, in conjunction with other major sports leagues, sued to keep Delaware from offering single game bets. They won that lawsuit, but the ruling was quickly appealed by the state of Delaware and Governor Jack Markell.
Delaware claims that they have the right to offer single game bets. They made their argument to the Supreme Court, but on Monday the justices rejected the state's appeal, and left Delaware with the same form of gambling that they offered this past year.
Sports leagues are growing weary of the gambling expansion that is taking place in the US. For years, the NFL has refuted the idea that betting drives their sport. Every year, however, millions of dollars are spent each weekend by gamblers trying to predict the outcome of NFL games.
NBA Commissioner David Stern has made comments recently that the NBA would be willing to explore the possibility of allowing bets on their games. Stern acknowledged the growing gambling trend in the US, but was unwilling to go as far as to say that the NBA would change their policy anytime soon.
Nevada is currently the only state in the US that legally offers single game sports betting. Each year, millions of travelers pack Las Vegas sports books to make wagers on various sporting events.
