Do Cardinals Even Have A Chance With Super Bowl Betting Public?
The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the most storied franchises in professional sports. Their fan base may be wider than any pro team outside of the New York Yankees. This what the Arizona Cardinals are up against on Sunday in the Super Bowl.
Sports books have been kind to Arizona, only making them a seven point favorite, but as the big game approaches, there is one burning question. Will gamblers be able to pull the trigger and bet on the Cardinals over a franchise like the Steelers?
This is not saying Arizona cannot win the game. They are the most talented offensive team in football and their defense has played better in the playoffs then it has all year. Still, with all of that said, gamblers do not tend to take small underdogs in big games.
Had this been the Philadelphia Eagles or New York Giants, bettors would believe those teams could win the game. There is a reality check, however, that gamblers take before placing bets, and the reality with the Cards is that they have never won a Super Bowl.
This realization does not only come with the Cardinals. When a team has not had a lot of playoff success, it takes a few years before people believe they can win. It happened in the NFL recently with both the Ravens and the Patriots.
The Ravens came into their Super Bowl appearance with the Giants and brought one of the best defenses of all time with them. They were still underdogs to New York because of the familiarity factor. They won.
For New England, gamblers were considered crazy if they placed money on the Pats to beat the high flying Rams, who had just won a Super Bowl two years before. They also won.
Perception is not always reality, but it does sway gamblers. This week, the bettors will most likely come in hard on the side of Pittsburgh, and it will be up to the Cardinals to once again prove the betting world wrong.
