Early Super Bowl Betting Odds: Patriots Favored Again Over Giants
Odds makers had one of their richest days ever several years ago when the undefeated New England Patriots went into the Super Bowl against a team they had already beaten during the season, and lost. That year, the New York Giants gave the Las Vegas sports books a post-Christmas present.
Typically, the betting public places their money on the favorite, which is why odds makers alter the betting lines in order to swing gamblers towards the underdog. In some cases it works, and in others, the favorite is considered to be too strong, as was the case when New England took their undefeated record into the Super Bowl in 2008.
This year, the Patriots will get their chance to redeem themselves for that loss when the two teams match up in two weeks. The Patriots have been installed as three point favorites, a much lower number than the double digit favorite they were the last time the two teams met in the big game. The total for the Super Bowl is set at 55.5.
This Super Bowl will not feature the same cast of characters as last time, with only seven Patriots remaining from their last Super Bowl appearance. The Giants also have many new faces, making the history less of a factor than had the teams met immediately following their last Super Bowl match up.
New England comes into the game with Tom Brady playing what some analysts believe is the best football of his career this season. On the other side, Eli Manning made headlines earlier this season when he proclaimed himself elite. Manning then went out and proved all of his detractors wrong by sending the Giants back to the Super Bowl for the second time in four years.
If Manning wins, he will have one more Super Bowl win than his famous older brother, Peyton. The debate will go on as to which Manning is better, but with a second Super Bowl the younger Manning will have more jewelry than Peyton, regardless of the outcome of the debate.
Brady will also be chasing history. After defeating Baltimore Sunday, Brady became the quarterback with the most playoff wins in the history of the NFL. The quarterback and his coach, Bill Belichick, also broke the record for most Super Bowl appearances (five). If the Patriots win, Brady would tie Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw as the only quarterback's in history with four Super Bowl championships.
