The East West Shrine game and Ohio State basketball are keeping gamblers busy on the day before the NFL championship games. This weekend can often be slow for Las Vegas sports books leading into the championship games, but that is not the case today.
"I came to Las Vegas not only to play some slots and poker, but also to make some bets," said Larry Bell. "I might as well get the full experience out of the time I have in Vegas. I have already won some money on basketball games earlier, and I'm hoping to win more on the East West game. If that happens, I can bet with house money on the title games tomorrow."
The East West Shrine game was set up to allow some of the best players in the nation the opportunity to improve their stock leading into the draft. In past years, players who were under the radar on draft boards had big games that allowed them to move spots in the mock drafts. In some cases, the players moved up several rounds.
For gamblers, the East West game is a tough sell. Coaches are trying to get as many players into the game as they can, and that can be troublesome for gamblers attempting to chose a winner. The game has become similar to a professional sports all-star game in the idea that gamblers are basically flipping a coin to decide a winner.
College basketball has also been at the forefront of betting today at the sports books. Ohio State, the number one team in the country, was in action against number twenty-two Illinois. The Buckeyes were able to survive a scare from Illinois en route to a 73-68 win. The win was the Buckeyes' twentieth of the season.
Tomorrow, college football and basketball will give way to the NFL. Sports bettors will be watching closely as the Chicago Bears host the Green Bay Packers for the right to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. In the early evening, Pittsburgh will try to go to their second Super Bowl in the past three years when they take on the upstart New York Jets.
