Familiar Teams Heading Towards Major League Baseball Playoffs

With less than a week left in the Major League Baseball season, there is not much time left for teams to jockey for a playoff position. One team that will be left out for the first time this decade is the New York Yankees.

Even though the Yankees are not going to the playoffs, there are some familiar names on the front of the jerseys of the players that are going. Of the teams headed towards the playoffs, only the Rays and possibly the Brewers are new to post season play.

The Boston Red Sox will get the opportunity to defend their title from last year after they clinched a playoff spot on Tuesday night. They still are in danger of losing the division to the Rays, but they will be in post season play either way.

The Anaheim Angels are another team that has made a habit out of winning division titles. They just about had the American League west wrapped up by the all star break, and the only thing for them to do the rest of this week is to set their rotation up for the playoffs.

The Philadelphia Phillies returned to the playoffs last year, and are looking to do so again this year. They currently lead the National League East, but with no room for error. The Mets are 1.5 games back in the division, and the Brewers just 2.5 games behind in the wild card race.

The National League West appears that it will be crowning the Los Angeles Dodgers the title barring a last week collapse. They are three up with five to play over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Over in the Central, the Cubs have already clinched the best record in the National League and will have home filed advantage throughout the National League playoffs. Their Chicago neighbors in the American League are in a battle with Minnesota for the division lead.
