Favre Retiring Leaves Jets Betting On Another Quarterback

The New York Jets and their fans thought they had a match made in heaven when they plucked Brett Favre away from the Green Bay Packers last off season. For the first part of the year it looked as though they were right.

The Jets became many people's pick to go to the Super Bowl after defeating previously undefeated Tennessee halfway through the year. That is as far as that talk would go. They ended up not even making the playoffs and it cost Eric Mangini his job.

The Jets next move was to hire Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan to be their head coach. Ryan's first order of business was to lock down Favre for at least one more year. Mission not accomplished. Favre announced his retirement, again, on Wednesday, and it leaves New York without a quarterback.

Now, Ryan will have to make a decision that will begin the process of defining his head coaching career. Which quarterback should he bring in to lead the Jets into next season.

Since it is the Jets, the first name that comes to mind is Vinnie Testaverde, but that thought only makes sense for its initial humor. That leads us to current Jets quarterbacks.

Kellen Clemens, Brett Ratliff, and Eric Ainge. Not likely any of them are prepared to be the main guy in the big city. There are, however, some intriguing veterans available for the taking.

Kurt Warner is a free agent, and any team needing a quarterback that saw him play last year would be foolish to not at least explore that option. Rex Grossman, Byron Leftwich, and Jeff Garcia are available also.

It is only a couple of weeks removed from Ryan signing on to lead this ship. Now, with his office still not even fully remodeled, he has a decision that could define whether he succeeds or not as an NFL coach.
